Owning future podiums

Posted Mar 4, 2010 By EMC News

EMC Editorial - Canada didn't quite 'own the podium' at the Vancouver Games, but the host country came close. Even though Canada didn't finish atop the medal standings, this country did win the most gold medals at this year's Games. Furthermore, the country set a new record for the most first-place finishes in the history of the Winter Olympics.

The Own the Podium (OTP) program generated almost as much discussion during the Olympics as the accomplishments of the athletes. Many criticized OTP officials for putting too much pressure on athletes by setting the goal of the most medals at the Games.

The focus on winning also came under fire for being un-Canadian. Other countries accused Canada of unfairly barring opponents from practicing at facilities in Vancouver and Whistler.

Canada and OTP officials do not have to apologize. Pressure to perform comes with the territory as an Olympic athlete. Predicting Canada would win the most medals, while a bold statement, showed confidence in our athletes. For the most part, they did not disappoint.

As for the controversy over access to facilities, Canada should not be blamed for trying to make the most of home ice and slope advantage. A lot of money was spent on the Olympics and Canadian athletes should be the primary beneficiaries of that effort.

With the Olympic flame now extinguished in Vancouver, attention will turn to the future of Own the Podium, particularly in regards to funding. The federal government has committed to another $11-million per year over the next two years. However, the $11-million that came from the provinces and corporations are in question.

Some have called on the federal government to make up the shortfall. However, the provinces must continue to provide funds to the program. British Columbia is the only province to say it will do so, but it has not specified an amount.

Athletes united this country for two weeks in February. Now Canadaboth federal and provincial governments as well as companiesneed to be united in their support for our athletes as they strive to 'own the podium' at future Winter Olympics.
